When we think about tools that promote inclusive teaching, grading policies and classroom discussions often come to mind. However, sometimes the most impactful tools are the quietest—such as our token economy system.

At first glance, tokens might seem like just another reward structure: students earn them for completing tasks, staying engaged, or participating meaningfully. But tokens are more than just gold stars—they are small acts of empowerment that create a more equitable learning environment.

Structure, Support, and Self-Advocacy

Here’s how it works: Students earn tokens as they progress through their coursework. Later, they can redeem those tokens for practical support—like deadline extensions or assignment retakes—when life gets overwhelming.

This offers flexibility within structure. Students aren’t penalized for life's unpredictability; however, they also don’t depend on one-off exceptions or uncomfortable conversations. Instead, they plan ahead, engage actively, and enjoy a built-in support system when needed.
