The Power of Tokens: How a Simple System Promotes Inclusive Teaching
When we think about tools that promote inclusive teaching, grading policies and classroom discussions often come to mind. However, sometimes the most impactful tools are the quietest—such as our token economy system.
At first glance, tokens might seem like just another reward structure: students earn them for completing tasks, staying engaged, or participating meaningfully. But tokens are more than just gold stars—they are small acts of empowerment that create a more equitable learning environment.
Structure, Support, and Self-Advocacy
Here’s how it works: Students earn tokens as they progress through their coursework. Later, they can redeem those tokens for practical support—like deadline extensions or assignment retakes—when life gets overwhelming.
This offers flexibility within structure. Students aren’t penalized for life's unpredictability; however, they also don’t depend on one-off exceptions or uncomfortable conversations. Instead, they plan ahead, engage actively, and enjoy a built-in support system when needed.
“Introducing tokens has greatly benefited my students. They are more motivated to engage in class, take initiative in the lab, and, most importantly, they feel empowered and flexible with their homework. Quiz retries have encouraged deeper reflection on the questions, and deadline extensions have decreased stress and significantly reduced late submissions. I am very thankful to have been given the opportunity to introduce this feature, especially since it requires little to no additional workload on my part." - Roxane Jourdain, Baylor University
Reducing the Hidden Burden
But the magic of the token economy goes beyond logistics!. It helps remove an often invisible barrier: the fear of asking for help.
Many students hesitate to advocate for themselves, even when they’re struggling. Whether it’s imposter syndrome, fear of judgment, or uncertainty about what’s “allowed,” that quiet anxiety can erode confidence and deepen feelings of exclusion. The token system sidesteps this. It gives students a dignified way to access support—no explanations, no justifications required.
As one instructor said, “these tokens become a helpline for when life happens.” That’s not just clever—it’s compassionate.
Belonging Starts with Design
At its core, the token economy is about building classrooms where every student feels seen, supported, and safe to show up fully. It brings structure and grace into the learning experience, giving students both agency and breathing room.
And when students feel like they belong—when systems are designed with their real lives in mind—they don’t just survive the course. They grow, they engage, and they rise to their potential.
That’s the promise of inclusive teaching. And sometimes, it begins with something as small—and powerful—as a token.
